BLACKWATER - Alfred "Al" Lomaquahu Sr., 70, died on July 23, 2013, in Chandler.
Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the District 1 Service Center. The funeral will be at 4 a.m. Thursday at Blackwater Baptist Church, with the Rev. Aaron Johns officiating. Burial will be in West Blackwater Cemetery.
Mr. Lomaquahu was born on July 7, 1943, in Hotevilla and was a son of Percy and Anna Lomaquahu. He was a Joint Use Area officer for the Hopi police department, a police officer for the Peach Springs (Supai) department and police chief for the Gila River Indian Community. He worked for the Coolidge Unified School District and retired after 17 years as head custodian.
He volunteered time at Blackwater School and this year received a Grandfather of the Year plaque. He was baptized at Hopi Hills Baptist Church in 1988 and was a big-hearted, outgoing and very friendly person who enjoyed his truck.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Diana; five sons, Alfred Lomaquahu Jr. of Keams Canyon, Olsen Lomaquahu of Farmington, N.M., Christopher Lomaquahu of Chandler, Wilfred Lomaquahu of Casa Blanca and Carl French of Sacaton; seven daughters, Suzette Lomaquahu of Flagstaff, Colleen and Athea Lomaquahu of Phoenix, Percy Anna Lomaquahu of Pinon, Rethema Youvella of Polacca, Carol French of Sacaton and Anja Yanez French of Blackwater; a brother, Steven Lomaquahu of Phoenix; 30 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Lomaquahu, and two sisters, Alice Baca and Bessie Poleheptewa.
