MARICOPA - Amy Sue Cole, 61, of Maricopa died on April 20, 2015, at home.
Rosary and scripture service will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. A potluck will follow.
Ms. Cole was born on June 22, 1953, in Hastings, Michigan, the youngest child of Fred and Naoma Cole. She spent most of her childhood in Maricopa. The Cole family was deeply rooted in Maricopa, and they had a love for community that she honored until her last days. After graduating from Maricopa High School, she earned a nursing degree from Central Arizona College and launched a lifelong career taking care of others in need. When her son Troy was born, she returned to Maricopa to raise him.
As a single mother, she was deeply involved in his activities. She was a nurse by day, a "baseball mom" by night and still found time to tend to other families in need and Troy’s friends. She was in charge of Maricopa’s Salvation Army chapter, raising money and buying Christmas gifts for families without. She worked at one of Maricopa’s first health care clinics, caring for children and families who often lacked access to medical care. She also was Maricopa High School’s nurse. She spent many years as a hospice nurse in the area, allowing people to die with dignity and peace. Just as important to her, she cared for patients’ families, nurturing their souls to ease grief.
Survivors include her son, of Maricopa; a brother, John Cole of Indiana; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Andy Cole.
