COOLIDGE — Annette Estella "Cricket" Nye, 71, of Coolidge, the first woman to serve as deputy and in other positions with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, died on Nov. 1, 2011, in Florence.
Ms. Nye was born on Oct. 12, 1940, in Minneapolis and was a daughter of Victor and Agnes Smith. She worked at the Sheriff's Office from 1975 to 2005 and also was the first woman sergeant, detective, lieutenant and president of the county Fraternal Order of Police organization. She was dedicated to her job and assisted with the Toys for Tots program and fallen officer memorial fund. She loved being a servant of the public.
She enjoyed playing bingo in her free time and collected pig items. She was a mentor and hero to many.
No service will be held at her request.
Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Martinez of Coolidge, Vickie Nye of Phoenix and Neicy Fuontez of Prescott; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Hoverson, and a brother, Albert Smith.
