STANFIELD - Annie Concepcion Chogyuha, 84, of Stanfield died on Dec. 13, 2018, in Casa Grande.
Mrs. Chogyuha was born on May 8, 1934, in Pisinemo Village to Jose and Refugia (Garcia) Acosta. She had many talents, including as a seamstress, quilt maker and cook. She attended Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California. She started work picking cotton by hand, then became a nutrition aide, housekeeper, seamstress, dishwasher and stock clerk. She would raise money for her church and was always available to lend a hand if needed.
After retiring she was selected as a representative of the Tohono O'odham Nation in Mexico and worked as a traditional leader in the community, striving for all members to preserve their homelands. She loved spending time with her family, listening to music, dancing and having her grandchildren around her.
Survivors include two daughters, Rose Gamez and Rita Chogyuha of Stanfield; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alejandro Chogyuha Sr.; a son, Alex Chogyuha Jr.; a daughter, Teresa Chogyuha; and a baby, Jessie Chogyuha.
Wake service at the Chogyuha home, 36795 Talla Drive in Stanfield, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21. Funeral Mass celebrated at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Holy Family Catholic Mission in Blackwater by the Rev. Alcuin Hurl. Burial in Blackwater Cemetery.
