Bernadette Jean Reed, age 77, of Bapchule, passed away on February 22, 2025, at the Caring House in Sacaton. She was born on November 10, 1947, to Frank and Alice Reed in Sacaton.
Throughout her life, Bernadette demonstrated a profound commitment to her community. In 1968, she was honored to be named Miss Gila River. Additionally, she was a traditional dancer and singer, actively participating in traditional ceremonies and offering traditional massages. Bernadette was also an enthusiastic and traditional runner. As a cultural teacher, she imparted her knowledge of her language at St. Peter's Indian Mission School, serving as a health educator as well.
After successfully, completing a written and physical agility test at the age of 50; Jean joined the Gila River Fire Department as a firefighter apprentice. She continued to progress, graduating from the Academy class of 99–2. She served as a firefighter until 2006, when she became the departments first Fire and Life Safety Educator in the Fire Prevention Division setting a high standard for the role. During her career, Jean earned her firefighter I & II, Emergency Medical Technician, Wildland firefighter, Hazardous Materials Technician, Youth Fire Setters specialist certification, and Car Seat Technician. Helping others was her passion, and her contributions have left a lasting impact on our department and community.
Bernadette was a dedicated mother of seven, deeply involved in their lives. She cherished the time spent cooking, particularly her special Sunday breakfasts. Instilling values of respect and generosity in her children, she was known for her giving nature. It was not uncommon for her to share something delightful with those around her, and her warm, loving demeanor made it clear that she cherished each person in her life.
She is survived by her husband, Wally Kyyitan, her children Jeffery Martin, Ginger Martin, Anna Lee Martin, Esantee White, Mollie White, and Raven White. She is also survived by her siblings, Lupe Reed and Sylvester Reed, along with 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her son, Russell White; her parents; and her siblings, Delton Reed, Leotta Marrietta, Fidelus Reed, Shelton Reed, and Benedict Reed.
A wake in her honor will be held on Friday, March 7th, from 6 PM to 10 PM at the District Five Multipurpose Building in Casa Blanca. The following morning, a mass will take place at 7 AM at Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Bapchule, followed by her burial at Saint Peter's Catholic Cemetery.
Bernadette Reed's legacy of love and community involvement will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
