CASA GRANDE - Don G. Guinn, 87, died on Dec. 17, 2015, in Casa Grande.
Mr. Guinn was born on May 21, 1928, near Oberlin, Kansas, to Bruce Guinn Sr. and Dorothea Bowser. He was reared on the family farm east of Oberlin along with his three brothers and graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1946. He attended College of Emporia for a time and met his future wife there. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and on Sept. 18, 1948, he married Juanita Welch at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1954 but served in the Air Force Reserve for 30 years, retiring as a master sergeant. He moved his family to Oberlin and worked with his dad on the farm. During that time he attended McCook Junior College and later Kansas State University, graduating in 1959 and majoring in agriculture education.
He taught in Highlands and Downs, Kansas, for one year each before returning to Oberlin to teach, which he did until 1971. He and Juanita then went to Nigeria on an Agricultural International Development contract until the summer of 1974. They then moved to Colby, Kansas, for two years while he worked at Northwest Kansas Technical School in Goodland, then to Beloit, Kansas, where he served as assistant director of a vocational-technical school. They were in Manila from 1980 until 1983 while on another Agriculture International Development contract. They then moved to Newton, Kansas, where he was assistant principal of a vo-tech school. He retired in 1990 to Canon City, Colorado, where he sold real estate until 2000. He then lived in Colorado Springs for 10 years. Juanita died on Aug. 7, 2007. On June 19, 2010, he married Murrel Ford, and they made their home in Casa Grande after a short time of RVing. He was a member of the United Church of Oberlin, Lions and KSU Alumni.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Diana Leibbrandt and Donna DeBusk of Colorado Springs; four stepchildren, Janet Schonely, Michael Ford, Ellen Reed and William "Billy" Ford; two brothers, Gary Guinn, of Oberlin and Larry Guinn of Deer Trail, Colorado; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Guinn Jr.
The service will be held in Oberlin.
