The celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel, with Pastor Jim Young and the Rev. Dr. Robert Cornelius officiating.
Mr. Silas was born on Sept. 13, 1929, in Troy, N.Y., the oldest of three children of Florence and Frederick Silas Jr. Born on Friday the 13th, he said frequently that was his lucky day. He was a serious and hardworking boy and proud of his stamp collection. After graduating from high school he joined the Air Force in 1949. He was stationed in Albany, Ga. There he met the love of his life, Vivian Adams, when he almost struck her with his car. Two months later on New Year's Eve they drove to Leesburg, Ga., to be married. He was stationed in Japan for a while guarding planes during the Korean War.
When he returned the couple lived on Long Island and he worked on Wall Street. In 1963 they and their daughters moved to Miami, Fla., where he was a postal carrier. He walked and rode a bicycle during his career and was well liked by his customers. He enjoyed his hobby of going to horse tracks. After retirement he and Vivian visited most of the tracks in North America. They moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1990. He loved to show visitors around "my town" and was called "Mr. Excitement." They moved to Casa Grande in 2002 to be near family. He was a kind man and devoted to his family.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years; two daughters, Vivian A. Lewis of Georgia and Robin S. Pfohl of Casa Grande; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
