MARICOPA - George Irvin Akers, 76, died peacefully in his sleep at home in Thunderbird Farms on Feb. 6, 2018.
Mr. Akers was born on Dec. 14, 1941, in Wheatland, Wyoming, and was a son of June and Arch Akers. He graduated from Wheatland High School and attended the University of Wyoming. He had several jobs before joining Pacific Power & Light in Glenrock, Wyoming, and he later retired from the company. One of his favorite jobs was with the livestock exchange in Douglas, Wyoming. He ran the sale barn with a partner for a few years later in life, and it was one of his greatest pleasures.
He and his wife lived on the ranch in Douglas that had belonged to his first wife's parents, Irving and Margaret Carlson. At their death, they left the ranch to the Akers family, who ran feeder cattle, put up hay and ran a bed and breakfast. He loved roping and horses and sold the ranch and moved to the Maricopa area in 1995 so he could rope all winter. He made many friends in the area. He spent several years in senior pro rodeo and was sorry to have to give up his horses a few years ago.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Lucile "Lucy" Whisenant Akers; two adult children, Anita Akers Phipps of Pearland, Texas, and Carlson T. Akers of Wright, Wyoming; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martie Carlson Akers, and a sister, Peggy Darling.
J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel in charge of arrangements.
