SACATON - Hazel I. Eschief, 81, of Sacaton died on Feb. 17, 2016, at Caring House.
Mrs. Eschief was born on Feb. 1, 1935, in Sacaton and was a daughter of Frank Johnson Sr. and Isabelle Davis-Johnson. She was a certified nursing assistant and enjoyed listening to music, especially country, chicken scratch and old hymns, and watching movies. She liked to cook and was known for her beans and tortillas.
She also enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to read. She was very active with concern for the residents while at Caring House since 2009, where she was a member of the residents council. She was always interested in events going on around the Gila River Indian Community.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Allen-Eschief of Sacaton Flats, Kathleen Eschief-Narcia and Denise Eschief-Garcia of Sacaton; a son, Clayton Eschief Jr. of Sacaton; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Eschief Sr.; two sons, Daniel and Richard Eschief; a daughter, Lydia Eschief; two brothers, Frank Johnson Jr. and Ira Johnson Sr.; and four sisters, Evelyn Manuel, Lorraine Manuel-Johnson, Imogene Enos and Thelma Johnson.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Caring House and continuing from 6 to 9 at the District 3 Service Center. The celebration of life will be at 7 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Sacaton, with the Rev. Aaron Johns officiating. Burial will be in East Sacaton Cemetery.
