MARICOPA — Homer Bruce Koliba, 80, one of the first administrators of Central Arizona College, died on Oct. 22, 2012, at Hospice of the Valley Dobson House in Chandler.
Mr. Koliba was born in Columbus, Texas, on Jan. 30, 1932, and was a son of Homer L. and Kayce Koliba. He served in the Navy in 1951 and 1952 but was forced to leave the service after he was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. He received a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University, a master's in educational administration from the University of Arizona and a degree in financial accounting from Arizona State University. He became a teacher in 1955 and later business manager of Ajo Public Schools. In 1962 he became business manager of Nogales Public Schools. He was recruited in 1963 to help with planning and development for the new Cochise College in Douglas as interest in community colleges grew.
In 1967 he was asked by CAC's founding president, Don P. Pence, to help with planning and development of the new college as dean of business services. It opened in 1969. He later became vice president of business affairs before retiring in 1979. He moved to Honolulu in 2000 and returned to Arizona in 2006, moving to Maricopa the next year. Throughout his life he traveled the world, often on solo expeditions. He celebrated his 70th birthday in 2002 with a solo, round-the-world trip and was surprised by several close friends in Rome.
Survivors include a sister, Kathryn Whitfill of Pasadena, Texas; three nieces; and two nephews and had many longtime friends who sometimes sought his wise advice.
A private service is planned. Donations may be made in his name to foundations of CAC and Cochise College.
