Hugo E. Chavez, 60, of Eloy died peacefully at home on November 11, 2013 after a 20 year valiant fight against kidney cancer. He was born in Mexico and moved to Eloy, Arizona at the age
of 8. He was a studious and inquisitive learner and graduated from high school in three years
while working at various jobs including Stuckey’s and the copper mines. He pursued higher education first at Central Arizona College and then completed a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology
at the University of Arizona in 1977. During this time he married his wife of 38 years, Bette. Upon graduation he worked with at-risk youth before deciding to return home to Eloy to embark on a small business venture. He and his wife owned and operated the Encore Family Restaurant from 1978-2011. During his life he was an active member of the community and served on the City of Eloy Pension Board, Planning and Zoning Committee, and CAHRA. In 2008 he traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with members of Congress to advocate for the community.
He is survived by his wife Bette; daughter Kelly Chavez-Allen of Phoenix; sons Dr. Anthony H. Chavez of Tucson and Zachary P. Chavez of Phoenix; brothers Sergio A. Chavez and Julian
C. Rivera; sister Isela Chavez Benton; granddaughters Cailinn and Camille; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Santa Cruz Valley Food Bank (CAHRA) or the Kidney Cancer Association (kidneycancer.org).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 6 pm at the Valley Funeral Home in Eloy.
