Jacob "Jack" Berger

Jack grew up in Schefield, ND on a farm with six brothers and six sisters, was an Army sergeant, and took courses in electronics. He was a master electrician and lineman, climbing power poles in Wyoming and wiring missile sites in North Dakota. He was proud of his 30-year career at the Basin Electric Power Cooperative in North Dakota and Wyoming, rising to maintenance superintendent.

Nothing was more important to Jack than his wife, six children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He created fond memories playing guitar for his wife and sing-a-longs with his siblings and transferred his love of music to his children.

Jack loved to invent things, was adept at keeping his prized Corvair cars running, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was proud of the house he built himself in Hazen, ND and had a knack for finding items to fix when visiting family and friends’ homes.

Although he battled Parkinson’s disease in his later years, Jack never let the disease or any obstacle defeat him. As he did all of his life, he set an example of overcoming obstacles with his will and faith. Jack was dedicated to his church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree).

Jack married Helen Elizabeth Berger of Flasher, ND on August 5, 1958. They were married for 57 years. They had six children, Maureen Aikin Berger of Casa Grande, AZ, Blaine Berger of Longmont, Colorado, Maurice Berger of Chugiak, Alaska, Audrey Cardany of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, Zita Berger of Los Angeles, California and Damian Berger of Golden, Colorado.

The Berger family lived in North Dakota, Wyoming, and Arizona. Jack and Helen traveled everywhere in a pickup camper with their children. They went to Rome to see Pope John Paul II, and delighted in a trip to Germany after his retirement.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Helen, his six children, Maureen Aikin Berger (Larry), Blaine Berger (Susan), Maurice Berger (Cinda), Audrey Cardany (Brian), Zita Berger and Damian Berger; six grandchildren, Jason Berger (Stephanie), Nathan Berger, Beth Berger, Eric Berger, Emily Greensfelder (Tyler), Caitlin Anne Cardany (deceased), one great-grandchild Jackson Berger, and his sisters Veronica Baar of Dickinson, ND and Cathy Barta of Billings, MT.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, parents, four sisters, and six brothers.

Jack loved bingo and breakfasts, so in lieu of flowers; a donation in his name can be made to the St. Anthony Tradition of Faith.
