Julia Cortez

Julia Hernandez Cortez, 88, of Casa Grande died on April 12, 2015, at home.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, with rosary recited at 11. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 by the Rev. Ariel Lustan. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Cortez was born on Jan. 7, 1927, in Corpus Christi, Texas, and was a daughter of Pedro and Antonia Hernandez. She worked in school food service and loved to sew and listen to Elvis Presley and Selena. Her passion was her grandchildren, and she loved to cook for and feed them.

She also loved her novelas and was a simple and loving person. She was a very strong, traditional woman who taught her family respect and responsibility and gave them advice.

Survivors include three sons, Freddy and Frank Cortez of Chandler and Tony Cortez of Casa Grande; a sister, Hilaria Lumbreras of Casa Grande; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Nicholas, in 2001; six brothers; five sisters; and a great-grandchild, Lilliana Talamantez.
