KOHATK VILLAGE - Larry Francisco Garcia, 76, of Kohatk died on Dec. 4, 2016, at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson.
Mr. Garcia was born on May 10, 1940, in Kohatk to Silas Garcia and Clotena Cipriano. He was active in his community on the Tohono O’odham Nation and served as Sif-Oidak District chairman, vice chairman, councilman and was on the Land Board and Livestock Committee. He also served on the district Development Authority and Johnson-O’Malley Parent Committee.
He worked at Stanfield School as a sports coach and bus driver and also worked for Pinkerton Security, some mines, in surveying and Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement. His interests included welding, sports, rodeo, ranching, mentoring, traditional waila music, being outdoors and family time. His favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys.
Survivors include his wife, Letitia Lewis; six adult children, Timothy and Cynthia Garcia, Francine Sanchez, Stephanie Doss, Ernestine Ortega and Owen Garcia; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Garcia.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Mission. Burial was in Kohatk South Cemetery.
