KOHATK VILLAGE - Letitia Maxine Garcia, 75, of Kohatk died on Jan. 12, 2017, at home.
Mrs. Garcia was born on April 24, 1941, in Chuichu Village and was a daughter of Elliott Garcia and Dorothy Thomas. She was an early childhood coordinator for the Tohono O’odham Nation’s education system and retired after 30 years. She served on the nation’s Sif-Oidak District Planning Committee for Economic Development, Save the Children Federation Committee, the District Education Committee and on the Title IV and Johnson-O’Malley Parent Committee in the Stanfield Elementary and Casa Grande Union High School districts.
She was a past alternative Legislative Council representative and a Catholic eucharistic minister and catechism instructor. She enjoyed sewing, sports and all types of music.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy Garcia of Kohatk and Owen Garcia of San Xavier; four daughters, Cynthia Garcia of Kohatk, Francine Sanchez of Arizona City, Stephanie Doss of Henderson, Nevada, and Ernestine Ortega of Casa Grande; six brothers, Willard, Harlan and Leander Lewis, Larry Garcia, Harry and Cecil Lewis, all of Chuichu; two sisters, Theresa Lewis of Casa Grande and Deborah Lewis of Chuichu; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Garcia; a daughter, Cheryl Garcia; a brother, Vernon Lewis; and a sister, Pauline Rubio.
Funeral Mass celebrated at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Mission, with wake beginning at 6 p.m. at the Garcia home. Burial 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Kohatk West Cemetery.
