SACATON - Lillian Violet Torres, 79, of Sacaton died on Nov. 11, 2013, at Caring House.
Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. today at the District 3 Service Center. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Mission in Sacaton. Burial will be in East Sacaton Cemetery.
Mrs. Torres was born on Nov. 14, 1933, in Sacaton to Minnie and Albert Miguel. She was a hospital cook for the Gila River Indian Community before retirement. She also worked for the tribal Head Start program, career center, day care, elderly program and Sacaton Public Schools as a cook and at the old diamond plant in Chandler and the Dela-Tek ammunition plant in Blackwater.
She later spent her time doing crossword puzzles from the Casa Grande Dispatch, playing solitaire on her grandson’s iPad and shopping at various secondhand stores. She spoke the O’odham language and conversed with her sisters on a daily basis. She was funny and made people laugh in any situation. She loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was known for her red chili tamales.
Survivors include two sons, Robert and Douglas Torres of Sacaton; three sisters, Ester Jackson, Reynalda Shaw and Alberta Lopez, all of Sacaton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fidel; a brother, Lloyd Miguel; and three sisters, Melinda Johnson, Thelma Miguel and Leona Hieder.
