Manuel Alfonso Acu�a, 78, of Casa Grande, a decorated career soldier and active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and other organizations, died on Aug. 27, 2011, at home.
A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel, with the graveside service at 12:30 in National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, in Phoenix. A memorial service will follow at 4 at VFW Post 1677 in Casa Grande. Chaplain Andy Sanders will officiate.
Mr. Acu�a was born on Sept. 19, 1932, in Tucson and was a son of Andres C. Acu�a and Carmen Orozco. He was a highly decorated veteran of the Korean War and a two-tour veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a tank commander and retired as a first sergeant.
He held many offices in the VFW, including commander and chaplain, and was District 10 surgeon. He also was a member of the American Legion and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed camping, RV'ing, fishing and crossword puzzles. He was a loving and devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia E.; three daughters, Leah(Jamie) Wilson of Honolulu, Armida(Scott) Vaughn of Casa Grande, and Claudia(Sean) Caldwell of Casa Grande, AZ; a brother, Larry of Tucson; three sisters, Rosalie, Mary Lou and Grace, all of Tucson; eight grandchildren, Andrew(Brittany), Danielle, Nicholas, Jordan(Jeremy), Scott Jr., Kelcie,Jordan, and Bryce; three great-grandchildren, Aziani, Armani, and Kailani. He was preceded in death by a son, Manny "Baby" Jr. In lieu of flowers donations are being accepted at all three locations to aid the family in the incurred expense of the unexpected loss.
