CASA GRANDE - Margaret W. Coffey, 94, died on Sept. 23, 2017, at Family Tys Assisted Living Home in Casa Grande.
Mrs. Coffey was born on Dec. 26, 1922, in Phoenix to Michael B. and Verdie O. Watson. An Arizona resident her entire life, she moved to Tucson at age 5, enrolling at Sam Hughes School. She attended school in Tucson and Sahuarita until 1935, when the family moved to Gilbert. She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1940 and attended Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff and later the University of Arizona.
She worked at various positions in Tucson and Phoenix and met and married Alex P. Cowan in 1947. They divorced, and in 1956 she and her daughter Tina moved to Casa Grande. She worked for Erwin & Erwin Insurance and Electrical District 2. In 1960 she met and married Austin Doyle Coffey. They were married for 51 years, raising Tina and Doyle's daughter, Nancy.
In 1982, when Doyle retired from teaching math and science at Casa Grande Junior High School, they moved to Star Valley. Nine years later they moved to Payson, where she was very active in Northern Gila County Genealogy Society and raising her two grandsons. She moved to Family Tys in Casa Grande in 2012 after the death of her husband.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Nancy Hamilton Hughes of Tucson; a brother, Ralph B. Watson of Fort Smith, Arkansas; and two grandsons. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Christina L. "Tina" Cowan, and three sisters, Wanda Hackworth, Barbara Chaffey and Wilma Boyle.
Memorial service at 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel in Casa Grande, with the Rev. Paul Elgin of First Presbyterian Church officiating.
