Marilyn Ada (Ontman) Boie
Marilyn was born on Tuesday, January 14, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska, the youngest daughter of Joseph Lewis and Edith Pearl (Blackburn) Ontman. She passed peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning, July 6th, 2024, at home in Arizona City, AZ, with her loving husband, John, by her side. During her time on Earth, Marilyn lived a very full life that touched many.
Marilyn grew up very poor, but through hard work, dedication, and a very helpful sister, she was able to go to college, earn her master's degree, and even travel to Europe. During this time, she missed her sister, Sylvia, and her children greatly, and kept in touch with frequent letters. Marilyn and Sylvia were very close growing up. As adults, finances, geography, and health issues kept them physically apart, but they spoke on the phone as often as possible (in the days when long distance was outrageously expensive), and always made sure to call each other on their birthdays.
Marilyn married the love of her life, John Michael Boie, on June 10, 1967, in a beautiful ceremony, which included just about every member of both of their families, at the University of Illinois Chapel in Champaign, IL, where they met. Their first child was born in April 1968, and with him, Marilyn was reborn as a mother. She instantly wanted more children, and this would be her new purpose in life. She and John were overjoyed, and before too long, they were the parents of 4, 3 boys and a girl. Marilyn was a loving mother who always did her best, and was always generous with her time, money, thoughts, and prayers. She was the mom who hand-sewed Halloween costumes, the mom who brought cupcakes to class and the mom who would bring her kids and their friends to McDonald’s for no other reason than it made them happy.
Marilyn struggled with some major health issues throughout her life, including a rare vascular condition called Moyamoya disease, which she was diagnosed with in 1982. Things were sometimes tough, but she never complained or asked, “Why Me?” Marilyn did the best she could with what she had and lived a very full and mostly happy life. Even with the health issues, Marilyn still loved being a wife and mother, and continued to do her best. When grandchildren began arriving in 1988, she was again overjoyed, and took on the new role of grandmother with pride. She helped as much as she could, played with them, watched all of their favorite shows with them, and again, just did the best she could with what she had.
Marilyn is preceded in death by both parents, 2 sisters, 4 brothers, a nephew, and other extended family members. She leaves behind her steadfast husband of 57 years, John M. Boie, 4 children, John J. Boie, Stephen Boie, David Boie, and Anne Boie, many grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
