Paul Mason, 77, a longtime Casa Grande resident, died Sept. 1, 2008 while hospitalized in Scottsdale.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Paul Mason Sportsplex, north of Rodeo Road on Pinal Avenue. Casual wear is suggested because of the weather.
Mr. Mason was born on June 15, 1931 in Nipinnawasee, Calif., and was a son of George L. and Myrtle Mason. He lived in Casa Grande his early childhood years, later returning to attend Casa Grande Union High School. Prior to graduation in 1949, he played football and was a member of the first Class B state champion track team at CGUHS. He was state champion in the 100-, 220- and 440-yard dashes and anchored a winning relay team. Soon after graduation, he served in the Arizona National Guard and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Thomas. He loved and was proud of Casa Grande and served 30 years on the Casa Grande Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. His service was recognized by the naming of the softball complex.
He was involved in youth organizations, coaching and officiating for athletic teams. He was a lifetime member of the Casa Grande Valley Elks Lodge and participated in other community service organizations and projects. He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren's sports activities and spent many hours on the golf course with his family and friends.
He was in the dry cleaning business all of his adult life, owning and operating Elite Cleaners on Florence Boulevard for close to 35 years. He was devoted to his family and loved to dance with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years; a son, George E. "Ernie" Mason of Casa Grande; two daughters, Paula Schroeder of Tempe and Carrie Walton of Flagstaff; a brother, George L. Mason Jr. of Kentucky; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Oneta Fortney and Mary Mason.
Memorial contributions may be made to: City of Casa Grande, Paul Mason Sportsplex, to assist in purchasing children's playground equipment.
