Robert "Bob" Meiers

September 18, 1935 — March 5, 2014

Durango resident Robert John Meiers died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Casa Grande, Ariz. He was 78. Known as "Bob," he was born to Robert and Mary Meiers on Sept. 18, 1935, in Oak Park, Ill. While in college he became an accomplished Golden Glove Boxer. He graduated from DePaul University in 1957 with a degree in Philosophy. On June 29, 1957, he married Rita Fox in Maywood, Ill.

He was a salesman for various companies in the Chicago area and Northern Indiana through 1976. During that time he was an active trap and skeet shooter and involved with the Jaycees and Boy Scouts. Three of his sons earned the Rank of Eagle Scout. The Meiers family moved to Durango in 1976, where Bob & Rita owned and operated Durango Tire until their retirement in 2004. Bob loved outdoor sports, camping, dirt bike riding, hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing.

Mr. Meiers is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rita Meiers, of Durango; sons; Timothy Meiers, Joseph (Charisse) Meiers and Daniel Meiers, all of Durango, Robert (Deborah) Meiers of Chandler, Ariz and daughter, Sandra (Scott) Donovan, of Loveland; brothers William Meiers of Durango and Donald Meiers of Lombard, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
