Mrs. Smith was born on Nov. 2, 1964, in Kankakee, Illinois, and graduated from Herscher (Illinois) High School. She went on to earn a degree in nursing from South Suburban College.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two adult children, Brandon and Jennifer; and seven grandchildren.
