Steve McCarville was born in Moorland, Iowa on December 11, 1930, in the basement of his family home due to a snowstorm that prevented his parents from making the trek to the hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was the fourth child born to Francis and Catherine McCarville.
Steve graduated from Moorland High School and entered U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of sergeant in the 11th Airborne Division. After being honorably discharged, Steve began his career installing gym equipment in the Midwest and East Coast for Horn Brothers which is based in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Later, he started his own installation company while living in Pennsylvania, which is still in business today. The family moved back to Iowa to be closer to extended family in the late 60’s.
