Steven David "Steve" McGath, 64, died at home in his sleep on Oct. 18, 2012, from complications of a stoke.
Mr. McGath was born on Jan. 3, 1948, in Mount Sterling, Ohio. He graduated in 1966 from Plains High School. He served in the Army from 1967 to 1970 and in the Air Force from 1972 to 1980. He served one year in Vietnam. He was an expert marksman with small arms and a sharpshooter with the M14 rifle. He also was a master crew chief on UH-1N and HH-1H helicopters. He received honors for an unprecedented safety record of more than 99,000 accident-free flying hours. His unit received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and he also received the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal as well as Commendation Medals from the Army and Air Force. He was honorably discharged from both services.
He was a truck driver for several companies, ending his career with Schweitzer Trucking, contracted with Eagle Milling. He loved fishing, working on anything and especially riding his Harley-Davidson.
Survivors include his wife of 261/2 years, Judy; a daughter, Kathleen Necaise of Mississippi; three stepchildren, Paul Milligan of New York, Debbie Milligan of Ohio and Rhonda Milligan of Arizona; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Donna Burlile McGath, and a sister, Carol McGath.
