Sylvia Cook Cruz, 71, of Phoenix, a daughter of an Arizona pioneer family, died in the early morning hours of April 7, 2008 at Scottsdale Healthcare.
She was born Feb. 20, 1937 in Phoenix. Her parents, Albert and Mollie Cruz, from Bisbee and Casa Grande, raised her with two younger children in Casa Grande. Her grandparents were James and Rosa Cook. A lifelong artist, Ms. Cruz attended St. Mary of the Wasatch College in Salt Lake City, then received a bachelor's degree from College of the Holy Name in Oakland, Calif. She went on to teach elementary school at Sierra Vista School and the Creighton School District in Phoenix. She had many friends and was known for her smile, presence and personality.
Survivors include two daughters, Gina Gulden and Cathleen Sullivan of Phoenix; two sons, Colt Cruz of Phoenix and Michael Cruz of New York City; a brother, Albert Cruz of Tempe; a sister, Rose Ann Eggeling of Scottsdale; and four grandchildren.
A scripture service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel.
