FLORENCE - Thomas John "Tommy" Celaya Sr., 73, a Florence native and resident, died on Dec. 7, 2014, in Phoenix.
Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. Monday at Assumption Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10.
Mr. Celaya was born on July 7, 1941, and was a son of Arturo and Consuelo Celaya. Raised in Florence, he graduated from Florence High School and the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree. Paying his way through college working as a barber, he spent time filling in at his brother’s barbershop when school was not in session. He taught school in Tucson prior to 1976. He then taught in Florence, was a favorite teacher to many and coached a variety of sports until his retirement. He continued substitute teaching for many years.
He was a humble man with a kind heart and was always willing to help others in need. A great story teller, he enjoyed spending time with all of his family. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed eating, especially menudo.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lillian; a son, Tommy Celaya Jr. of Florence; two daughters, Victoria Padilla and Susan Cheryl Celaya of Florence; four brothers, Tony, Louie, Pete and Fred Celaya, all of Florence; two sisters, Flora Montano of Florence and Carmela "Bita" Anchondo of Eloy; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie Ann Celaya; three brothers, Art, Eddie and David Celaya; and a sister, Angie Celaya.
