Velma led a vibrant and fulfilling life, engaging with her community in numerous ways. She was a dedicated people person, serving as a girls' basketball coach during her children's formative years and later as a surveillance worker at Gila River Casinos. Dancing was a favorite pastime when her health permitted, and she loved sharing stories, drawing, and creating holiday decorations for her fellow residents. Velma's spirit shone brightly in her role as a member of the choir, and she was particularly honored to be crowned Valentine's Day Queen for three consecutive years at the Caring House.

Velma is survived by her beloved children, Mary Graham, Gary Mix, Donna Ethelbah, Rudy Mix, and Tanya Raphael, along with her sister, Shirley Polingyowma. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 23 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Velma is preceded in death by her parents; three sons: Stewart, Spencer, and Ronald Mix; her siblings: Edward Allison, Diane Allison, Leona Ethelbah, Thelma Miles, and Lavern Antone; as well as two grandchildren.
