CASA GRANDE - Wesley Terrance "Wes" Flynn, 74, of Casa Grande, a longtime coach and athletic director, died on Oct. 29, 2015, at Chandler Regional Medical Center, surrounded by friends and family.
Mr. Flynn was born on Feb. 28, 1941, in Pittsburgh to John and Lucy Flynn. He graduated from St. Justin’s High School in 1959 and accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Arizona. He earned several athletic honors including Outstanding Senior in Basketball, Most Inspirational Basketball Player and UA Outstanding Senior Athlete. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and always was an avid Wildcats fan.
He accepted his first teaching and coaching job at Dysart High School in El Mirage in 1965 and led the team to a state championship in 1968-69. In 1970 he accepted a teaching and coaching job at Casa Grande Union High School.
He taught physical education and driver’s education and was the boys varsity basketball coach. His love of sports and education led him to accept the athletic director position, and he was chosen Athletic Director of the Year in 1989-90. He touched the lives of many students and players.
He is survived by his life partner, Becky Rankin; a daughter, Kelly Antolak; two sons, Brian and Galen Flynn; two stepdaughters, Devin Rankin and Meghann Klinger; and 10 grandsons.
The celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Casa Grande Union High School’s Jack Spilsbury Gym.
