Willard "Vernie" Mannis

COOLIDGE - Willard "Vernie" Mannis, 80, died on Feb. 22, 2017, in Phoenix from complications of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Mr. Mannis was born on July 15, 1936, in Dallas. He met his first wife, Melsa L. Mills Mannis, in Chandler when he was stationed at Williams Air Force Base. They married in 1956. He was commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3713 in Coolidge for several years. He also was a proud member of the American Legion. He was known for his dry sense of humor, helpful nature and strength of character.

Survivors include his oldest son, Claude Willard Mannis; a sister, Wanda Pierce; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Melsa and their second son, Earl D. Mannis.

Memorial service at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the VFW post in Coolidge.

Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
