William S. “Bill” Gastelum, 81, formerly a longtime justice of the peace in Casa Grande and a retired police officer, died on June 27, 2010, at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel, with rosary recited at 7. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church by the Rev. Kevin Clinch. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mr. Gastelum was born on June 25, 1929, in Tucson and was a son of Jose and Guadalupe Gastelum. He retired from the Casa Grande Police Department after 20 years and served as a Pinal County justice of the peace in Casa Grande for 181/2 years, having been elected several times. He served as president of the Arizona Justice of the Peace and Constable Association and vice president of the Arizona County Justice Association.
He was a member of the Casa Grande Elementary School District board, serving for a time as president. He was active in volunteer work, including with the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross and Special Olympics and was a life member of Knights of Columbus and Casa Grande Valley Elks Lodge. He was an avid Diamondbacks fan and a member of a four-wheelers group. His favorite vacation spot was Laughlin, Nev.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Hope G.; three daughters, Angelica Gastelum of Mesa, Silvia Brown of Buckeye and Elvia Lichter of Casa Grande; two sons, Fernando Gastelum of Casa Grande and Robert Gastelum of Coolidge; a sister, Josephine Martinez of Casa Grande; a brother, Rudy Gastelum of Casa Grande; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and six brothers.
